University of Washington, Tacoma adding craft beer certificate program this fall

The University of Washington, Tacoma is happy to announce that it is launching a Craft Beer Certificate Programs starting this fall. UW Tacoma, which just happens to be located in downtown Tacoma's historic and recently reborn Brewery District, will offer a practical, hands-on approach to provide students with a strong understanding of the key concepts, tools, and techniques required to excel in different aspects of the craft brewing industry. A common introductory course provides the background to pursue any or all of the other, specialized certificates.

Core Class:

Take as a standalone certificate course or as the required course to start your extended certificate program.

Mastering Beer Styles: Exploration and Evaluation

40 hours over 10 weeks

Certificate provides participant the core knowledge around the history, terminology and style characteristics of beers. Core curriculum is based upon knowledge requirements of industry standard certifications such as the BJCP and Cicerone.

Upon completion of this program participants will be able to:

  • Exercise knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of the world's diverse beer styles.

  • Promote, recognize, and advance beer, tasting, evaluation, and communication skills.

  • Understand the standardized tools, methods, and processes for the structured evaluation, ranking and feedback of beer.

  • Have the knowledge base to take industry certification exams.


Extended Certificate Specializations:

You may choose each of these specialized certificate programs individually - in addition to the required Mastering Beer Styles course (or equivalent.)

Business of Craft Beer

60 hours over 20 weeks

Certificate spans all stages of business development in craft brewing industry, from finding and managing your finances to building marketing strategies and managing your operation. Finalized business plan project will give the next steps to executing and managing a successful business.

Upon completion of this program participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of what it means to be an entrepreneur.

  • Examine business marketing opportunities.

  • Complete a feasibility analysis of a business idea.

  • Identify innovative business strategies.

  • Evaluate financial management decisions.

  • Address the challenges and opportunities specific to brewing business management and entrepreneurship.

  • Have a completed business plan and be ready to seek financing and start their business.


Operations of Brewery Services

(In development for Fall 2018)

Provides participant the tools necessary to plan, staff, and manage a craft brew-centric restaurant, bar, or brewery tasting room. Capstone project will include development of a working policies and procedures manual.

Upon completion of this program participants will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of a brew-centric point-of-service business

  • Effectively work with internal staff

  • Properly use and maintain specialized equipment

  • Identify and improve customer experiences

  • Negotiate and work with external vendors


Science of Brewing and Fermentation

(In development for Winter 2019)

Curriculum provides the technical skill to produce wort, manage yeast and fermentation processes, and finish and package the product on a large scale. Capstone project will include multiple test batches of product.

Upon completion of this program participants will be able to:

Understand and apply the technical aspects of brewing.

Safely manage and maintain production equipment.
