Old Stove Brewing now open at Pike Place Market

On Saturday, April 16th Old Stove Brewing hosted a Grand Opening celebration at its brand new brewery and taproom in downtown Seattle. The location of this new Seattle brewery is very near the corner of 1st Avenue and Pine Street. Basically, part of the Pike Place Market. The taproom is at street level on 1st Avenue, with the brewery in the basement. The actual address is 1525 1st Ave, Seattle. Map it.
Eight beers were on tap at Saturday's event, including an IPA, Northwest Wheat, Pale Ale, Pilsner, Saison, Stout, Double IPA and a Brown Ale. Two more, a Session IPA and a Cascadian Dark Ale, are on deck for the week after the opening, said Old Stove Brewing Co-Founder Brian Stan.
Chris Moore, one of the co-founders, grew up in Michigan, where he chopped wood to fuel the family's wood stove. That's where his love affair with the Kalamazoo wood stove was born. He saw it as a warmth-providing piece of functional art. So when he and his fellow co-founder, Brian Stan, decided to open a brewery, Old Stove Brewing seemed an appropriate name. A cast iron, nickle-plated Kalamazoo stove occupies a place of honor in the corner and on the giant mural that occupies one wall.
The taproom will be a place where people can get to know each other at 16-foot-long community tables made from red oak timber from Chris Moore’s family’s woods in Vicksburg, Michigan. “It’s a great way to foster a way for people to get to know each other over a beer,” Moore said. “The community seating is a really nice element, as seen in Munich and in beer halls and all over the world.”
Moore has a deep interest in history and has curated a collection of vintage neon beer and brewery signs, some of which will be featured at Old Stove Brewing. When not studying the mural or making new friends, beer fans can check out three museum-style display cases exhibiting 40 beer cans each from the ‘30s, ‘40s and ‘50s, representing long-gone breweries and canning models (flat top vs. cone top) from states across the country.
"This may be your grandfather’s heater, but this is not your grandfather’s beer," they explain on the company's website. "We piped steam into our brewery – not an easy task, but a good one for brewing beer and sustainable fuels. We scour the Pacific Northwest for the best hops and grains. We treat the water differently for each style of beer. We make sure ingredients are fresh, temperatures are precise and lines are clean."

The opening day event is a fundraiser for the Pike Up Campaign, the Pike Place Market Foundation's campaign to raise funds for many great additions to the market and surround area. More producers, more farmers, more crafts, more art, more public space, more parking, and one new pig named Billie are all part of the upcoming development on Western Avenue.
